Reviving Yamuna Featured

Delhi has no option but to revive its lifeline “Yamuna”. Yamuna’s upstream water serves Delhi’s 70% fresh water requirement and downstream polluted water is being used for irrigation purposes which makes agriculture produce highly contaminated. Though Yamuna starts getting polluted even before it enters Delhi, but once it enters Delhi it turns into a poisonous drain. Before entering Delhi its pollution is caused by fertilizers and insecticides mixed with agriculture runoff, untreated sewage and industrial effluents. Once its water reaches Delhi, it is sucked out from river to meet water requirement of estimated 18.6 million population of Delhi. What Delhi returns back to river is highly polluted sewage and effluent through about 3 main drains and about 19 other drains.

Encroached, broken and uneven footpaths of Delhi Featured

Written by  |  Monday, 24 April 2017 00:00  |  Published in Featured

Most of Delhi's footpath's are encroached, broken and uneven, making them extremely dangerous for pedestrian use. Ideally, footpaths should be smooth and even, with no crinkled or unsafe surfaces that can cause people to fall and injure themselves. Even, landscaped and clean footpaths make streets and main roads look beautiful and walker friendly. Though municipalities in Delhi seem to be making efforts in this direction, but they need to focus on standards, creating standard barriers for motorcycles, penalize encroacher's and illegal parking. Number of places footpath's run over drains with open manholes. Spotting an electric pole with open wiring or razor fencing wire running across footpath, that can slit some ones throat isn't rare.

DTC bus breakdown: cost to tax payers Featured

Written by  |  Sunday, 23 April 2017 00:00  |  Published in Featured

Delhi Traffic Police recorded 4896 traffic jams in 2016. Of the 1204 recorded jams due to vehicle breakdown in the middle of the road, most and toughest ones were caused by the breakdown of the DTC buses, as per data provided by Delhi Traffic police. In addition to commuters frustration and economic loss due to lost time, jams cause significant burden to national exchequer due to addition fuel burnt. The International Energy Agency- IEA, expects India’s oil demand to rise the fastest by 6.0 million barrels per day to 9.8 mb/d in 2040. It projects that oil production will fall behind demand, pushing oil import dependence above 90% by 2040. The transport sector alone is expected to account for two-thirds of the rise in oil demand with 260 million additional passenger cars, 185 million new two- and three-wheelers and nearly 30 million new trucks and vans being added to the vehicle stock.
